Why is accessibility important for our digital services?

🦾 For User Impact

Public digital services are essential services for people residing in Singapore. As public officers we have an imperative to ensure every person of every ability is given access to these essential services.

🏆 For Product Excellence

As designers and engineers, we believe in quality and excellence to build a product for maximum impact. Accessibility is a marker of excellence as it is focused on maximum impact for every person, not just a particular segment.

🌐 For Innovation

Accessibility is an opportunity for innovation. Have you binged on Squid Game recently and don’t speak Korean? Well, that’s made possible by accessibility. Siri reading news to you? Yup, accessibility too. Think of the innovation that’s possible if we said ‘why not’ instead of ‘cannot’ to accessibility!

🖥️ It is part of our Digital Service Standards (DSS)

Accessibility and inclusivity are key parts of the DSS design principles. We are to ensure our services are:

  • Perceivable: Content is available in forms such as speech, large print or Braille
  • Operable: Functions are accessible through a keyboard, mouse or other assistive devices.
  • Understandable: Content is clear, concise and avoids jargon.
  • Robust: Services can be accessed across devices.
