Reopening of Chek Jawa Wetlands - 5 April 2025

Following from the oil spill incident on 3 April 2025, Chek Jawa Wetlands in Pulau Ubin has reopened for public access on 5 April 2025.

 

To prevent any further impact, we will let the oil residue at the affected areas at Chek Jawa Wetlands break down naturally, and will continue to monitor the biodiversity-sensitive areas closely.

 

The booms that were pre-emptively placed at Chek Jawa Wetlands will also be progressively removed.

Clean-up at Changi and Pasir Ris Beaches Ongoing - 4 April 2025

Agencies shared earlier today that as of 4 pm on 4 April 2025, there are no visible oil patches off Pulau Ubin and no new oil sightings at sea. The bulk of the clean-up is expected to be completed within the next few days.

 

Clean-up operations at parts of the beachfront at Changi Beach Park and the beachfront at Area 1 of Pasir Ris Park that are lightly stained are underway, and these areas remain cordoned off. Public access to Chek Jawa Wetlands in Pulau Ubin remains closed for further monitoring. 

 

Protective booms have been deployed around various biodiversity-sensitive areas such as Chek Jawa Wetlands, Sungei Tampines and Sungei Api Api.

 

Together with research partners, we have carried out visual assessments and thus far, there has been no observable impact to wildlife at Chek Jawa Wetlands, Changi Beach Park and Pasir Ris Park. Agencies will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Clean-Up of Oil Patch in Progress - 4 April 2025

The Johor Port Authority has informed the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) that the oil leak at Langsat Terminal, Johor has stopped and clean-up operations for the oil patch off the northeastern coast of Pulau Ubin and along Changi Beach are ongoing. 

As advised by the National Environment Agency (NEA), the public are to avoid swimming and other primary contact water activities at Changi Beach and Pasir Ris Beach until further notice. 

In addition, public access to Chek Jawa Wetlands in Pulau Ubin and parts of the beachfront at Changi Beach Park and the beachfront at Area 1 of Pasir Ris Park have been closed to facilitate clean-up operations. Booms have been deployed at Chek Jawa Wetlands in Pulau Ubin to protect the biodiversity-sensitive areas. 

MPA and partner agencies are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

Update on oil patch sighting – 4 April 2025

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has advised the public against swimming and other primary contact water activities at Changi Beach and Pasir Ris Beach until further notice, following an oil spill incident within the Langsat Terminal, Johor on 3 April 2025. In addition, parts of the beachfront at Changi Beach Park will be cordoned off to facilitate clean-up operations. 

As a precautionary measure, public access to Chek Jawa Wetlands in Pulau Ubin will also be temporarily closed off. We will be deploying booms at the waters off Chek Jawa Wetlands at daybreak on 4 April 2025. 

Agencies are monitoring the situation closely.
