Young Innovators' Fair 2020
The show must go online!
Culminating a year of hard work under the MOE Innovation Programme (IvP), the Young Innovators' Fair is a showcase of innovative ideas and products by our students. Open to Primary 5 and Secondary 2/3 students, the IvP develops students' problem-solving and inventive skills through addressing real-world innovation challenges.
Theme: Unlearn. Rethink. Create the Future We Want.
2020 has been a year of many unprecedented changes due to COVID-19. A shock of this scale has created many shifts in the habits and lifestyles of individuals as citizens, as employees, and as consumers. These shifts and their impact on how we live, work and learn will continue to evolve over the coming months. As we emerge from the pandemic, it will be important to embrace change, opportunity and purpose. This attitude will propel us into the new normal, step out of our comfort zones with more flexible and inventive thinking, and create the future we want.
What is innovation? Why and how do we innovate? In this animation clip, we share some ideas to grow our innovation muscles. And like any muscle group, the more you practise it, the stronger, better, and more unstoppable it becomes!
Special thanks to our partner SUTD for putting this video together for the Fair! Be inspired by the students and faculty who are leveraging the power of design to serve societal needs and pave the way for a better tomorrow!
The Online IvP Show!
The IvP Show has always been the highlight of the Young Innovators' Fair. This year, we feature 8 student projects in this online version. Join our characters as they journey through different aspects of everyday life and discover the benefits and promise of solutions developed by our young innovators.
Part 1 a
In the northern part of Singapore, somewhere in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, Siti and May Ling have just finished jogging. As they walk around the neighbourhood, they discover a new wristband bag that they can bring along when exercising, and takeaway packaging that prevents food from turning limp and soggy!

Part 1b
May Ling reaches homes to see Ah Ma bending down to retrieve her item. She expresses much concern and introduces her to a new grabber. They are then wowed by a new cooling system that is environmentally friendly and promises to keep everyone cool in sweltering-hot Singapore!

Part 2a
In the Southern part of Singapore, somewhere in a HDB block at Telok Blangah, Danial jumps out of bed thinking that he is late for school. His mother reminds him that it's actually Saturday! He is soon greeted with a new product that prevents his toothbrush from rolling off the cup, and a takeaway bag designed to reduce single-use plastic. What a great start to the weekend!

Part 2b
At the hawker centre, Danial observes Uncle Lim using a new ladle that is designed to prevent spillage and can also serve as an eating bowl. On his way home, he meets his friend, Jerome, who shares about the latest kickstarter-funded project: a product that helps pet owners to clean up easily after their pets in public areas. What a great weekend this is!

Project Galleries
This year, IvP participants worked on generating feasible and practical solutions to everyday problems, hoping to improve the quality of living for their target users. From a device that keeps birds away from the canteen to redesigned food packaging to reduce the use of single-use plastic, these projects represent their modest contributions to community. This online showcase features the creative efforts of 59 student teams. Their projects bring home the point that innovation need not always be radical; it arises from everyday ordinary problems that require practical solutions.

Gallery 1: Daily Journey
SOCIAL DISTANCING MONITORING SYSTEM USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: "What a good add-on to what the government has already started."
COVID-SAFE TOUCH: "I like that the most important part would be to have titanium dioxide to make the stylus and the ring and without titanium dioxide only the sponge option would be available. Also, the stylus and ring options are cool. Honestly, I want either a stylus or a ring like that."
Gallery 2: Better with Less
MECHANISED GRABBER: "Went through all 13 projects. This one is a thoughtful project for the disabled and elderly that shows the boy has a sense of compassion to help these 2 groups get back their lifestyle to be independent. The prototype has commercial potential too."
TOOTHBRUSH CUP: "I like how the cup has improved in two ways - it keeps the toothbrush in place with a smaller hole and it also prevents the toothbrush for slipping off the rim of the cup. I face these problems daily, so I do appreciate this cup!"
Gallery 3: Home Fix
CABLE-NIZER: "The cable-nizer is a great idea to solve the problem of messy cables. The best thing about this solution is that it can glow in the dark, and can be seen easily even though the lights have been switched off."
KEEP IT CLEAN!: "The innovations are really out of the world and I really feel amazed looking at these new innovations and the new budding innovators. For the purpose of cleaning, the new technology invention is great. I like the project because of the focus on cleanliness.🎉 Congrats. Keep on inventing more things🎊. Thank you. "
Gallery 4: Towards an Inclusive and Caring City
THE SOUPERB LADLE: "It is directed towards the elderly and is making life more convenient for them as many elderly folks live alone these days and may not have people to call for help."
HEAR'S THE BUS!: "This is not the only project on doing something for the visually impaired. That only shows how important it is to include them and I think that getting up the bus is something challenging for the visually impaired indeed. The insights the students had from the interview with a visually impaired made their problem statement more convincing. I also enjoyed the fact that they made their problem statement very specific and less generic."
FORGETMEDNOT: "Dementia is a really challenging condition and i like that this group has thought of a simple way to help patients with dementia using technology."
Gallery 5: Towards a Sustainable and Liveable City
PROJECT TRAWLEY: "This project reinvents the regular grocery trolley we know into something that is easier to use and caters to the needs of a lot of people. It also makes use of up-cycled materials, which is a great way of showing support for the environment!"
WALL-E: "I have never really seen many solutions for e-waste even though it impacts the world quite a lot. I have seen quite a few for food waste, and waste for other materials like paper or plastic. It is innovative and informative. It asks the right questions, such as the cost, and how to encourage people to involve themselves with the project."
MULTIPURPOSE MASK HOLDER: "I like that this project is relevant to the pandemic situation now, and since we will be living with this pandemic for quite some time in future, this will a very useful product to improve people's lives for the better."
School-based IvP Show
A Sharing by Teachers and Participants from Raffles Institution
To share the learning and insights gained from the IvP project experience, Raffles Institution has put together their own school-based IvP show. This video showcases the innovative ideas of participants presented through role-play, story-telling, 3D animation and simulation. Such an approach engages the audience by accessing their imagination, evoking their empathy and taking them on a journey of discovery. It also helps the audience to see the value of the innovation presented through the experiences of the target user. We hope other schools will find inspiration from this creative effort and create their own school-based IvP Show in future!
