In Sanga’s Senses – Poetries of the Human Experience

Each narrative is a tribute to the wonders of the human senses, inspired by Sanga Kala poetry that beautifully captures the essence of sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and intuition. These stanzas serve as the foundation for our exploration into the depths of human capabilities, in perfect harmony with the production's evocative title. At the heart of this artistic convergence stands the illustrious Brahmastra multi-ethnic ensemble, under the masterful direction of renowned composer and virtuoso flautist, Niranjan Pandian. Their live musical compositions are meticulously tailored to the essence of each narrative, creating an immersive experience that transcends the ordinary. Join us as we pay homage to the profound verses of Sanga Kala Literature and invite you to immerse yourself in the exquisite tapestry of human potential and sensory wonder. A famous Tamil poet, Arunachala Kavirayar has composed Rama Natakam which is mainly represented in Indian Music and Dance compositions in the recent times.

In our event, we will be presenting:

1. Kamban’s poems through Bharatanatyam. A Poet reciting through AI Illustrations, music composed with AI tools, dancers will be dancing to the digital poetry and musical composition.

2. Thereafter, dancers will perform to Arunachala Kavirayar songs with recorded music, to show the similarity of Kamban’s poems and Arunachala Kavi’s music compositions.

3. Audience participation will be an e-book quiz, where they can scan the e-book and answer questions that have been set related to our theme by the end of the same day or next day. Top 3 winners will be given cash prizes. We will announce the winners through social media. Respective winners will be contacted accordingly.

Parameswara - A Play for Students

This play is primarily targetted for School students at large. The play is presented as a "Live" acting with shadow play to induce the creative thinking with period settings and acting.

This drama is seen through the eyes of Munshi Abdullah, writer, translator and teacher to British officials including Raffles. The scene begins with Munshi telling the greatness of Singapura in the 13th and 14th centuries, but now lying in ruins due to Parameswara, a fugitive Prince from Palembang, usurped the throne from Singapura King. He later fled fearing attacks from Siam and Majapahit forces and established himself in Melaka and make it a great port rivalling Singapura in the 15th century. Parameswara's character shows his courage and resilience to re-establish himself by willing to take risks and seize opportunities to his advantage.

Avant is engaging audience in another of Avant Theatre’s signature presentation, Dramatic Stage Read with the story of Amarapali, which will possibly see the proscenium stage soon after receiving reactions and support on this Dramatic Stage Read performance.Constant interest creation in the performable text that might be yesteryears works but still hold relevance as an educative performance is the main objective of this play.
In trying times, we continue to educate and entertain our audience and create Tamil Theatre continuity in Singapore Arts Scene.
Amarapali in a Nutshell
The story of Amarapali is a fascinating tale from ancient Indian history and has significant relevance in today's culture. Amarapali, also known as Ambapali or Amrapali, was a renowned court dancer who lived during the time of Gautama Buddha, around the 5th century BCE.
Amarapali was born in Vaishali, an ancient city in present-day Bihar, India. She was exceptionally beautiful and possessed great charm and grace. Her beauty and talents as a dancer and singer made her extremely popular among the wealthy and influential men of her time.
Legend has it that when Buddha visited Vaishali, Amarapali offered him a grand welcome. She was deeply moved by his teachings and decided to renounce her courtesan life to become a disciple of Buddha. She chose to embrace a spiritual path and joined the Buddhist order of nuns. Ultimately, the play endeavours to trace Amrapali’s conflicts and strife as she walked towards her awakening, towards her liberation.

Thamizhisai Venthan TMS - A Tribute to
T M S

The objective of this programme is to highlight Tamil songs of different genres made famous by legendary Tamil Singer T M Soundarajan (TMS). From the mid 1950s to the late 70s, TMS has sung more than 10,000 Tamil songs in over 3,000 over films. His songs resonate with millions of Tamils not just in India but all over the world. In Singapore, TMS has been a household name in South Indian homes for decades. If this great singer was alive, he would be celebrating his 100th birthday this year. ( 24 March 1923 - 23 March 2024). As such, my team is organising this concert on 2nd March 2024 as a tribute to TMS to celebrate his contribution to Tamil Language through his songs. TMS is always cited as the perfect example of a singer with impeccable pronunciation of Tamil words. Thousands of his songs
are still performed at Tamil based events across the globe. Through his songs, many Tamil learners have picked up meaningful words that can be used in speech as well as writings.
Tamil Teachers from all levels can benefit from these songs and use them as topics of discussion in the classroom. Songs rendered by TMS were written by renowned lyricists
like Kannadasan and Vaali who used simple words in their songs and have thus reached out to the masses in the 60s and the 70s. Students from the current generation are not so exposed to these songs. Through this live concert which will also go online later, my team hopes to expose evergreen Tamil songs of an exemplary singer, to students learning Tamil Language as a Mother Tongue subject in Singapore schools. Through this concert, we are also giving opportunities for veteran Singaporean Tamil singers to showcase their talent once again.
The proposed programme hopes to create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Tamil Language through lyrical music.

Re Somma is back! Agam is excited to bring back the The Sell-out play which was a celebration of theatre actors in Singapore, through the life of our very own extraordinary veteran actor, Re Sommasundram. Somma defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers in our Country from 70s till today.
The play traces the meteoric rise of his career through his iconic stage performances, tv acting and revolutionary radio plays. He reached unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Somma, surrounded by darker influences, had his fair share of difficulties. The play will go deep into his life that is not known publicly. His struggles and his rise. It’s the hand-off of a legacy from one generation to the next, as life imitates art and vice versa.
Re.Somma cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and theatre enthusiasts to this day. The staging of Re Somma signals our commitment to celebrate very own narratives to the Tamil audiences of the here and now. In “holding up the mirror to nature”, we are exploring ways to update and contemporize this play.

Theatre Lab embraces the concept of a theatre laboratory or incubator, where aspiring theatre makers come together to develop their ideas into tangible stage productions. The key components of the laboratory is to nurture, train, and inspire artists, leaders, and younger practitioners through an artist development program and enable these theatre makers to creatively engage with communities and audiences, redefining perceptions of theatre. Throughout the journey, the laboratory provides mentorship with key leaders in the theatre community and participants are guided every step of the way, nurturing their raw ideas and transforming them into reality.
