MESSAGE FROM SUPERVISOR OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Boys’ Town, This year is indeed a special year for the Community of Boys’ Town as we celebrate a very significant milestone. Boys’ Town is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee year after having served the disadvantaged youths in Singapore for the last 75 years. Alongside this momentous occasion, we also acknowledge two other institutions sharing this milestone year: Assumption English School, celebrating its 70th anniversary, and Assumption Pathway School, marking 14 years of assisting the most vulnerable among their student body. Assumption Pathway School has roots tracing back to its early foundation in St. Joseph’s Trade School since 1938, a remarkable 85 years ago. Boys’ Town today has not only gone beyond providing residential care for boys but also in serving the children who need foster care. Boys’ Town takes pride in providing services not just for those requiring outof-home care but also in running a youth outreach programme aimed at engaging at-risk youths within the community. These diverse programmes demonstrates how Boys’ Town continuously adapts to meet the evolving needs of Singaporean society. What Boys’ Town has been able to achieve in these last 75 years goes beyond mere human effort; it is a testament to unwavering faith. We trust that our efforts will always be supported by divine providence, enabling Boys’ Town the capacity to assist the children and youths who are most in need. Much of these efforts also extend to helping the families of the less fortunate children and youth among us. As we would often recall the words of our Founding saint, St. Louis Marie de Montfort, that “Those whom the world rejects must move you the most!” We have been blessed with dedicated staff members, volunteers and benefactors who have been moved to ensure that Boys’ Town can continue serving those most in need. In closing, I offer my prayer that Boys’ Town may persist for many more years, faithfully serving the needy among us, in our society. Ad Multos Annos.

ASSUMPTION ENGLISH SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS This year holds great significance for our school as we mark a momentous milestone - the 70th anniversary of Assumption English School. Seven decades of educational excellence, growth, and resilience have shaped us into the institution that we are today that anchors on the beliefs of our Founder, St Louis Marie de Montfort. To commemorate this remarkable journey, we have embarked upon a special initiative, the Asian Youth Leaders for Human Fraternity (AYLHF) initiative, which resonates deeply with our school’s founding values. Our AYLHF initiative was launched on 29 & 30 March 2023 to embody the spirit of unity, compassion, and understanding that has been at the core of our school since its inception. It serves as a testament to the enduring commitment of our school community to promote harmony and peace among all members, fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect. We were blessed by the presence of our special guest, Ms Janet Ang, who is the NonResident Ambassador to the Holy See as well as our overseas partner schools - Assumption College (Samutprakan) and Montfort College from Thailand, St Joseph’s Junior High School and Waringin Junior High School from Indonesia, and lastly Kindai University Junior High School from Japan - to join us in this celebration of peace. The sharing of stories, experiences, and reflections on how the AYLHF initiative can impact our lives and the wider community encourages us to celebrate the moments when we come together, transcending boundaries and embracing our shared humanity. As we take stock of our 70 years of history, we believe that education goes beyond academics to encompass the holistic development of individuals. We strive to create an environment where students not only acquire knowledge but also learn virtues, compassion, and faith. Through a curriculum infused with the stories of St Louis Marie de Montfort, students are encouraged to explore their beliefs, and develop a strong moral compass. By integrating spirituality into their daily lives, we aim to shape well-rounded individuals who understand the importance of character, ethics, and service to others, fostering a profound connection that transcends mere intellectual growth. Being one of the schools under the auspices of the Montfortian Gabrielite Education Institutions, Assumption English School is well placed to prepare our students for the future. Our students will remain grounded, with a sense of Fortitude, Mastery and Charity, and will be a source of strength for those who are in need. The AES journey continues to be exciting and enriching. Labor Omnia Vincit. AssumptionKnights Unite and Celebrate!

STUDENT COUNCIL In January, we welcomed a new batch of Secondary 1 AssumptionKnights during the Secondary 1 Orientation! A series of activities were organised to help the new students acquaint themselves with one and another and embrace the essence of being true blue AssumptionKnights! They captivated their parents during the Knights’ Showcase with an impressive display of Montfort’s core values of humility and compassion through their performances. Another significant milestone of the year was the handover of leadership. Toh Shu Yu Shena (4/3) and Wong Jia Zhen Venice (4/5) stepped down as the President and Vice-President for the year 2022/2023. Together with the newly elected President, Gregory Goh Xuan Hong (3/1), Vice-President Lim Wei Qi (3/1), as well as the outgoing and incoming Student Council Executive Committee Teams, they planned a dignified Student Leaders’ Investiture for all departing and incoming student leaders. The theme ‘YouKnighted, We Lead!’ was chosen to reflect the student leaders’ shared aspiration towards a common goal guiding AssumptionKnights to greater achievements as one cohesive team. Semester 2 started with the Youth Day Celebration with the theme centred around “AssumptionKnights Forever, Appreciating YOUths!”. We hope that through this theme, AssumptionKnights can use their powers to spread compassion to their peers and radiate positivity amongst youths. The celebration ended with game booths and popcorn live stations! Not forgetting Teachers’ Day, where the teachers and AssumptionKnights had a rock-and-roll time in the school hall with the theme ‘Teachers, you rock our multiverse!’ By using Teachers’ Day as a platform, various talented AssumptionKnights came forth and put on a fantastic show through the AES’s Got Talent to show their appreciation for the teachers. We hope that our student leaders can live up to our tagline - Learn to Serve, Serve to Lead, Lead to Inspire!

The AES Basketball programme aims to develop basketball players with the necessary skills, from match strategies and teamwork to time management skills, in order to excel as an athlete. With character development as our focus, we stress on the following three key values: Discipline – self-management in handling the demands of academics and basketball Focus – winning mindset Diligence – the concerted and consistent effort put into trainings with values well-aligned to our school motto, Labor Omnia Vincit (Through Work Achieve Success)

ASSUMPTION ENGLISH SCHOOL

BASKETBALL

We subscribe to the ethos of ‘Making Every Basket Count’ to inspire our players to turn every challenge into an opportunity to shine. The team also follows the philosophy “When training is tough, competition will be easy”. Both our Boys’ and Girls’ Teams represented the school in the West Zone ‘B’ Division Basketball Championships in 2022. We are proud of our ‘B’ Division Girls’ Team, who did consistently well and was awarded the 4th position at the West Zone ‘B’ Division Girls’ Basketball Championship. The students are glad to be given the opportunity to represent the school for the games and will continue training hard and smart to fight for a spot in the top 4 positions next year!

FLOORBALL Adrenaline rush! Teamwork! Exhilarating! These are just some words to describe floorball, an indoor hockey game that has drawn the attention of many youths despite being a relatively new sport. AES is one of the pioneers in bringing floorball into secondary schools. AES Floorball has been an all-boys team since 2017 with the ultimate aim of winning the National Schools Floorball Championships. If you are looking for a fast-paced sport with lots of skills to develop you as a sportsperson and opportunities to forge lasting friendships with your teammates, Floorball is the CCA for you! Mission: To develop floorballers in character, leadership and sportsmanship through holistic programmes. This year, both our ‘B’ and ‘C’ Division Boys trained very hard for the National School Games (NSG). They were disciplined to stretch their physical stamina by running regularly on their own, outside of the regular CCA sessions, to make sure that they would perform well at the tournament. The captains also did a fantastic job by setting a good example to the team and spurring them on to keep fit. They affirmed the team when they did well and guided them closely. As a result of their hard work and a strong desire to win, the ‘B’ Division Boys entered the quarter finals for the very first time! The ‘C’ Division Boys also developed in their teamwork and game sense through this tournament.

Assumption English School (AES) has been endorsed as one of the School Football Academy (SFA) schools. This school-based academy is part of the Unleash The Roar! (UTR!) national project which aims to unite Singaporeans through football. As an SFA, AES works closely with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and Sport Singapore (SportSG) to provide a conducive daily training environment to develop our footballers holistically. The SFA aims to provide a training environment with high quality coaching, led by our Spanish Head Coach Mr Angel, assistant coaches Mr Ismail and Mr Justin, complemented by using the sports science and technology approach and with an emphasis on character development. The weekly afternoon training sessions for both ‘B’ and ‘C’ Divisions are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays;

JUDO “Still your Mind, Crush a Mountain” The AES Judo programme aims to instil in our Judokas the values of self-discipline and respect for others, as well as to develop mental and physical resilience, faster reflexes, better body coordination and concentration. AES Judokas train 2-3 times weekly. Each CCA training is focused on physical conditioning, learning new Judo moves and practising safe break fall techniques, so that we may become more proficient in the sport in a safe manner. The team is mentored by main coach, Mohamad Faizal (SJF Director in Coaching and Education), and he is supported by assistant coach, Gu Jiayao, and 3 teachers-in-charge. This year, we are pleased to report the illustrious achievements by AES Judokas in the following competitions: National School Games 2023 • B’ Division (Boys’) Team – Third 1 Gold, 3 in Top 8 positions • B’ Division (Girls’) Team – Second 5 Silver, 5 in Top 8 positions • ‘C’ Division (Boys’) Team – Third 1 Gold, 2 Bronzes, 3 in Top 8 positions • ‘C’ Division (Girls’) Team – 1 Silver, 2 Bronzes, 3 in Top 8 positions

For a softball player, few things can compare to the exhilaration of making a solid hit. Beyond the quest for excitement, our softball girls also possess the courage to stand their ground, the determination to train tirelessly in the sweltering heat, and the enthusiasm to collaborate with their teammates. With competitions and activities back in full force this year, the AES Rangers were able to take to the field and play against rivals from other schools. After months of gruelling training, the girls were able to test their mettle on the pitch, and were not found wanting. With the grit and tenacity they showed in each of their games, the AES Rangers were able to come back to school with their heads held high.

GIRL GUIDES AES Girl Guides 1st COY is part of the international Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting Movement, governed by The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), a global association supporting female-oriented and female-only Guiding and Scouting organisations. We offer opportunities for girls to get involved in local and international communities, equipping them to make a lasting positive impact through helping others. As Guides, they uphold the motto “Be Prepared” signifying their readiness to face any challenge. During our CCA sessions, we empower the girls through engaging and challenging programmes, offering unique experiences, adventures and activities. Our goal is to nurture girls of courage, confidence, and character, who can contribute to making the world a better place. The girls develop a deep sense of confidence and self-assurance, along with essential leadership and life skills – all while learning through fun adventures and forging lifelong friendships! AES Girl Guides participated in various events, such as World Thinking Day, National Day Parade, West Division Day and more. These events, provided opportunities to connect with Guides from other schools, creating cherished memories together. This year, AES Girl Guides achieved the Puan Noor Aishah Award (GOLD). The girls were thrilled when it was announced that they had attained Gold, which was a result of all their hard work last year. AES Girl Guides eagerly anticipates a future filled with more chances to share their Guiding spirit with the school and their country.

AES National Cadet Corp (SEA) is one of the 16 sea units in Singapore which is supported by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). As a member of the NCC (SEA), our cadets have the opportunity to learn from the best and gain valuable insights from servicemen of the Republic of Singapore Navy. Every year, HQ organises key milestone programmes for each level that aims to develop them into extraordinary youth leaders. Other than leadership programmes, NCC HQ also organised water-based activities such as the Sea Challenge, Mini-Kayaking Expedition and Dragon Boat Competition. All these activities proved to be tough and challenging for the boys, but they managed to complete the activities with much resilience and perseverance!

NCC (SEA)

This was also the first year that the Sec 1 Affirmation Ceremony resumed at Changi Naval Base after COVID-19. The cadets were introduced to NCC and RSN and were officially welcomed as part of the NCC family. They visited the newly renovated Navy Museum where they learnt more about Singapore’s maritime history. MSG Isaac William Noronha, who served as the USM in 2022/2023, achieved the NCC Outstanding Cadet Award (Sea District) in 2023. This award is only presented to cadets who have demonstrated dedication and leadership abilities in leading his unit in training and development. This reflected the sheer hard work and effort put in by the cadets coming to fruition. Through engagement in different activities, AES NCC Sea will continue to provide cadets with the opportunity to grow and become dependable men. To serve with pride and dedication, NCC!

“Seldom seen but ever-present” remains the unofficial motto of the Red Cross Youth (RCY) Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) reflecting our steadfast commitment to quietly serve both the school and the community. In 2023, we continue our tradition of dedicated service, building on the Unit Excellence Award in 2022. The true ethos of the CCA shines through when we serve within the school community. There is a profound sense of satisfaction and humility in aiding fellow schoolmates during their moments of need. In line with this, the unit has been on active duty at every major school event, from soccer matches to the National Day Fun Run, and other events organised by the school where injuries may arise. In addition to our school-based service, we have resumed activities like visiting the blood bank and inviting

DANCE ENSEMBLE AES Dance Ensemble (AESDE) is a team of dynamic individuals brought together by our love for dance. This year, AESDE was awarded the Certificate of Distinction for the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2023! We are grateful to our instructors and teachers for their support, as well as each student for their dedication and hard work that made this possible. The focus for AESDE this year is on student-initiated projects. Therefore, we have been putting up performances proudly choreographed by students themselves. One such performance is the Senja-Cashew CNY Dinner Concert, where we scored a photo moment with Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. In AESDE, we work together as a team by relying on each other’s strengths to pull ourselves up. Our CCA encourages a warm and welcoming environment, creating a place that allows us to learn perseverance, determination and teamwork. We believe that it is alright to make mistakes as long as we try our best and learn from them. Together, we strive for excellence with our motto: “Don’t just dance, move the world.”

GREEN CLUB Assumption English School Green Club is the place where we provide members with opportunities to be involved in sustainability and environmental conservation programmes. We explore the importance of biodiversity and our roles in the environmental conservation effort through “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” initiatives. In 2023, our members continued their unwavering commitment to our Greening initiative, actively participating in various sustainable practices. We conducted experiments with diverse edible plants in our compact garden plot, with composting as a central focus to enrich the soil for vegetable cultivation. Our successful harvests translated into culinary creations within the food lab, yielding delightful treats like pandan cupcakes, ginger cookies, and a refreshing blue pea lemongrass drink. Our creative pursuits extended to arts and crafts, encompassing origami jewelry, kinetic sculptures crafted from recycled paper, and charming teddy bears fashioned from towels. We aspire to refine these skills, producing high-quality items for sale to fundraise and promote the art of recycled crafts within the student community. Our ultimate goal remains to inspire more students to join our mission of forging a greener and more sustainable world.

Young Montfortian Associates (YMA) was set up with the aim of forming our young Catholic students in the Spirituality of our Founder Saint, Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort. Now into its 5th year, YMA boasts a membership of close to 50 students, from Secondary One to Five, led by Javier Sophia Margarette Pabualan and Nathaniel Lau Kea Chuan. The Executive Committee members were commissioned at the Beginning-of-School-Year Mass to serve and lead the Catholic students in the school. In 2023, YMA members have helped to organize many activities, such as the Secondary 1 Recruitment Drive, Ash Wednesday and various Masses.

ENGLISH AND LITERATURE DEPARTMENT The English and Literature Department’s vision aptly sums up the design and development of our English curriculum at Assumption English School - to develop students’ competency in English Language and Literature by cultivating a life-long habit of reading and the ability to communicate proficiently and confidently such that they not only become confident users of the language but also show appreciation and love for it. 1) Applied Learning Programme - titled SPEAK (SPeak English with grAce and Knowledge) The school’s SPEAK Programme aims to nurture confident and eloquent communicators who can articulate their thoughts and opinions well. The framework is anchored on a spiral progression of skills approach in developing speaking skills. It provides ample opportunities for all students to develop their speaking skills in an interactive and safe learning environment. These include projects at each level to showcase their speaking skills. Students who show a flair for speaking can showcase their talents in oratorical contests and/or be given student emcee roles at school events and programmes. 2) School-based Curriculum Sites One of our school’s strengths would be the development of our curriculum using e-pedagogy. With the launch of our Self-Development Programme (SDP) at Assumption English School being a pilot school for Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB), the English and Literature Units (together with other subject areas in our school) developed our school-based curriculum sites to nurture students to become confident users of the language in an independent and self-directed manner. 3) Poetry Showdown Our Lower Secondary students embark on a quest to write their own original poems based on the theme of Human Fraternity, in line with the school’s 70th Anniversary Theme. These poems were then presented during Assembly where teachers and students enjoy the live depiction of these poems. 4) Theatrical Experiences Our students have had the opportunity to attend plays such as “Perfecting Pratas”, “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” and the upcoming “Juliet”. These experiences will definitely be memorable as part of our students’ secondary school journey; allowing them to develop a love and appreciation for the language through such artistic forms.

MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Vision: Gracious Bilinguals with a Strong Asian Identity Motto: To engage learners in learning the language, values and culture through a purposeful and meaningful Mother Tongue Language programme. Highlight of 2023: The MTL Fortnight Programme AssumptionKnights honed their writing skills in the classroom by drawing from experiences gained during learning journeys to cultural heritage sites or interactive enrichment cultural workshops. AssumptionKnights also had the opportunity to convey well wishes to their teachers in the Mother Tongue languages and perform songs in Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Hindi, Korean, Thai and even in French and German!

Continuing with our tradition that began in 2019, and in line with our theme “Sharing Abundance with Gratitude”, our compassionate and generous AssumptionKnights donated food items for our ‘Packing Love, Sharing Abundance’ Chinese New Year Food Donation Drive. The donations were presented to less privileged households in Senja-Cashew, St Vincent De Paul “Friends in Need’ families, and beneficiaries from Ren Ci Nursing Home and Al-Iman Mosque as well as the cleaning and operations staff in our school. Our annual limited edition postcards, specially designed in-house by our talented AssumptionKnights were prepared for them too!

We also received a special visit by the God of Fortune during the concert!

Budding Writers and Language Ambassadors To encourage AssumptionKnights to develop their innate interest and potential in their Mother Tongue language, opportunities were provided for them to deepen their language mastery. Through the Authors-in-Residence Programme, students learnt how to write creatively and effectively from well-known Chinese language authors. Involvement in the nation-wide Rakan Bahasa (Friends of the Language) initiative enabled students to develop their skills in Malay. They took part in a Teevers video-making competition where they created a news report video based on a given theme. Through our programmes, our AssumptionKnights are able to develop appreciation and respect for their own cultural identity and the different Mother Tongue languages.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Science Department at Assumption English had an eventful year in 2023. Students participated in a variety of activities, including research projects, field trips, and competitions. These endeavors align with our department's tagline, "Ready to Engage, Open to Explore, Eager to Explain, Empowered to Elaborate", a guiding principle our teachers use when planning these experiences for our students. Research Projects Our students participated in various forms of research projects in their respective levels. For Secondary One, the Science Department collaborated with the CCE Committee to encourage the students to explore how they can use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to achieve environmental sustainability and play their part for the Singapore Green Plan 2030. Our Secondary Two students applied their knowledge of heat transfer in innovative ways. They worked with their teachers to develop a hypothesis, plan their experiment, collect data and present their findings through a video.

In Secondary Three, the Combined Science students were tasked with applying their knowledge from the different Sciences in an interdisciplinary fashion. This involved conducting research, perform home-based experiments and collate data, with the aim of exploring and sharing their findings related to eggs.

The NFS unit aims to enhance the learning of nutrition and food science through meaningful activities that connect to real-life issues. This year, the focus for the Lower Secondary students is for students to discover the importance of good nutrition through practical activities. Students will create their online food logs which record their learning progress as well as learning points on achieving good nutrition by making good food choices. Through this, students realise the importance of good nutrition in maintaining a healthy weight and reducing possible health implications at a young age. For the Upper Secondary students, the focus is to deepen students’ application of food science and nutrition concepts through exploration, investigation and evaluation skills with real-world examples, such as ways to use ‘ugly’ food produce in cooking in minimising food wastage and using natural sweeteners in cooking.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Joy of Learning Mathematics at Assumption English School At AES, we are dedicated to crafting a Mathematics curriculum that not only ignites students' curiosity but also provides them with the right motivation and enriching challenges. We firmly believe that all students have the potential to excel in Mathematics and should be encouraged to do so. To achieve this, we employ a three-phase approach to learning Mathematics. In the readiness phase, we introduce captivating contexts to engage students. In the engagement phase, we adopt an activity-based learning approach. For Secondary 1 students, a highlight activity during the year is the Kite Design and Flying Task. This task incorporates Mathematical concepts such as angles, shapes, and area, as well as Physics concepts like drag and thrust. Students then design and test their kites to determine which one hung in the air for the longest duration. This task doubles as their Weighted Assessment 1 which serves as an alternative assessment that is both authentic and relevant to the real world.

Montfort’s stories. The programme aims to provide students with a relevant, engaging, and authentic learning experience. DINAN Programme (Sec 1) – School Camp Experience Our Secondary 1 AssumptionKnights were delighted to participate in their first school camp at Heritage Chalet in Pasir Ris. What awaited them was a myriad of activities which were organised with the aim of cultivating their propensity for self-leadership as well as to inculcate their ability to work as a team. Over the 3-day course, our Level 1 AssumptionKnights participated in activities like campcraft, orienteering, night walk, hiking as well as a campfire! They demonstrated a sense of achievement after putting their best effort into each activity. It was a memorable 3-day, showcasing how well our students worked together and strived to be resilient in every activity that they partake in. In doing so, their positive attitudes are in tandem to Montfort’s credo of guiding the lives of those whom he touched, transforming individuals to respect the community of life and be harmonious in their relationships. RENNES Programme (Sec 2) Taking guidance from the story of ‘Montfort in Rennes’, the Rennes Programme has been intricately crafted to enable our AssumptionKnights to nurture and cultivate their character through a diverse array of experiences. The visit to the Lifelong Learning Institute gave AssumptionKnights a valuable glimpse into the future of work and unveiling new opportunities in the Digital, Care and Green economies. Through hands-on activities and simulations, they honed the ability to anticipate and identify potential future jobs that may come to exist while also discovering possible career pathways aligned with their interests. This exposure empowered them to effectively equip themselves for the evolving job landscape and to continue to explore their career aspirations. Addressing a crucial aspect of holistic education, the students engaged in a financial literacy workshop, where they gained insights into managing their financial requirements across different life stages. In this interactive learning setting, infused with gamified elements, they imbibed the art of making informed financial decisions, thus ensuring astute money management as they progress through life. AssumptionKnights participated in the Reduce @ North West Programme where they advocated environment awareness to the residents in Senja and Gangsa neighbourhood. They effectively communicated the significance of upholding environmental sustainability to the residents. They also distributed flyers and posters. In pursuit of knowledge, students visited the Science Centre Singapore where they delved into captivating principles of chemistry. Furthermore, a group of selected students had the opportunity to participate in a Forensic Science workshop, engaging in a hands-on DNA extraction activity.

Through engaging in new sports such as Kinball, Tug-Of-War and Tagging, AssumptionKnights came to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. The inter-class water soccer tournament was the highlight, providing students enjoyment and bonding opportunities. These sports activities provided students with avenues to help, encourage, and support each other, fostering an environment where seeking assistance is embraced, ensuring no one faces trials in solitude. As these activities come to a close, it is heartening to witness students wholeheartedly embodying the spirit of “standing up for the last, the lost, and the least”, mirroring Montfort in Rennes. POITIERS Programme (Sec 3) - Internationalisation Experiences In AES, every AssumptionKnight has the chance to participate in at least one overseas learning programme before completing their secondary education at Assumption English School. Recently, a group of 166 Secondary 3 students, accompanied by 24 teachers, took part in three travel groups for a Cultural and Immersion Programme in Bangkok, Thailand. The participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves while participating in various local activities, such as learning the traditional sport of Muay Thai and creating local handicrafts. Additionally, they had the opportunity to engage in Thai Cooking Practices, Thai Classical Dance, Thai Musical Instruments (Ranad & Khim), and Thai Puppets (Hun Krabok). The experience at Saraburi Community provided an eye-opening opportunity for our AssumptionKnights to interact with local students and villagers, participating in their traditional Bamboo Dance, vegetable farming, and creating upcycled rugs. The experience at Kanchanaburi Elephant World provided an educational opportunity to appreciate and protect these gentle giants while fostering a sense of empathy and responsibility towards their conservation. By interacting with the elephants in a responsible and respectful manner, AssumptionKnights learnt about their natural behaviours, habitats, and the challenges they face in the wild. They also gained knowledge about the efforts being made at Kanchanaburi Elephant World to rescue and rehabilitate elephants, as well as the importance of promoting sustainable tourism practices that prioritize the well-being and welfare of the elephants. While visiting Thai schools, our students found their Thai buddies to be incredibly helpful and welcoming. Even those who were not designated as buddies or involved in specific activities went out of their way to assist when our group encountered challenges, displaying their friendliness and contributing to a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our students hope to extend the same hospitality to visitors to our school. CESSON Programme (Sec 4 & 5) All our graduating students go through their rite of passage with the CESSON Programme, an education and career guidance-focused programme. Some of the key highlights of the CESSON Programme include a personal grooming workshop with former Ms Singapore, Ms Teo Ser Lee; and industry visits to 11 different companies such as Carousell, Singtel and McDonalds; an interview workshop with students from Singapore Polytechnic; Higher Education talks by various PSEIs; and an EAE preparation workshop with our ECG Counsellor, Ms Irene Tan, and the form teachers. The programme concluded with a mock interview where students donned their smartest outfit and presented their portfolio to a panel of interviewers formed by their teachers. Overall, the CESSON Programme is an invaluable resource for graduating students. It helps them make informed decisions about their future and prepares them for the challenges ahead.

FOUNDER’S DAY AND PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY On 28 April, AssumptionKnights gathered in the school hall to celebrate Founder’s Day and the Prize-Giving Ceremony 2023. Themed “AssumptionKnights Unite and Celebrate”, the event honoured our Patron Saint, St Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, and recognised the good efforts and achievements of the students and staff. This goes hand in hand with the Asian Young Leaders for Human Fraternity (AYLHF) initiative, which was launched in March 2023 as we celebrate our common humanity with the shared goals of hope, peace, and love among people from all walks of life. The Prize-Giving Ceremony was graced by our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Bernard Goh, Chairman of the School Management Committee, who has strongly and generously supported the school. To mark this joyous occasion, both students and staff showcased their talents. The AES Choir delivered a heartfelt performance of 'Mae-E,' composed by Kentaro Sato, in commemoration of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Meanwhile, AES Modern Dance presented a lighthearted contemporary piece titled 'The Simple Joy of Learning,' which serves as a poignant reminder not to become overly preoccupied with outcomes, but to have fun and appreciate the journey. In celebration of our successes, our dedicated teachers surprised everyone with a performance entitled 'A Joyful Occasion.' An energetic dance that added to the lively atmosphere. Ursus Lee from Class 4/3 was awarded the Sportsperson of the Year. Harez Azizil Bin Ezhwan of Class 4/5 was the recipient of the Brother Emmanuel Leadership Award; and Alicia Kwan Wen Qi, from Class 4/1, was awarded the Brother Vincent Award of Excellence. We congratulate all prize recipients and are certain that our students, the green shoots, will continue to grow to become men and women of character and learning, deep rooted in good values, as displayed by our patron saint.

The Secondary 4 and 5 cohort’s Graduation Day took place on September 22, 2023. The parents’ support was truly overwhelming, as they had the opportunity to visit the school to witness their children’s graduation. One of the notable moments of the event was the entrance of the graduates. They entered alongside the AssumptionKnight Mascot, making them the inaugural recipients of this mascot as a graduation gift. The distinguished Guest-ofHonour was Mr. Oliver Tan, one of our AlumKnight and a member of the School Management Committee. He encouraged our graduands to embrace their dreams and aspirations, urging them to explore what lies beyond their current horizons. Carrie Hee from class 4/1, this year’s Valedictorian, delivered a sincere and thoughtful speech that resonated with

the students’ appreciation for the learning and personal growth opportunities they had been provided. During the symbolic Pass-it-on ceremony, both teachers and graduates participated, signifying the transmission of values and knowledge from educators to the graduates. The intention behind this gesture is to inspire the graduates to share the kindness they received from their teachers with others, thereby paying it forward. Through this heartening event, the school aimed to affirm the hard work, progress, and development of the AssumptionKnights throughout their journey at Assumption English School.

NATIONAL DAY With National Day songs playing in the mornings in the week leading up to 9 August, AssumptionKnights looked forward with great anticipation to this year’s National Day Celebrations. The theme for Singapore’s National Day in 2023 is Onward As One. It encourages Singaporeans to look forward confidently and come together to build a shared future as one united people. The theme reflects Singapore’s determination to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and build a stronger future for all. It also aligns with the school’s theme for the year, “AssumptionKnights Unite and Celebrate”. We started the day with a solemn Observance Ceremony, where representatives of our uniformed groups marched our National Flag into the hall with pride. This was followed by the recitation of the recollections, highlighting our past and the contributions of our key leaders and the pioneer generation. The passionate response from the school population reaffirmed our collective knowledge of our nation’s history and struggles, and our commitment as one people towards ensuring our country’s freedom whilst holding onto the ideals of justice and equality. The celebrations continued with a series of activities. AssumptionKnights took part in the Fun Run and Home Walk, where students and staff had a homely experience in exploring the Boys’ Town Campus during the walk. A video screening in class showed stories of different Singaporeans from all walks of life working together to build a stronger and better Singapore. Through this, AssumptionKnights were reminded that everyone plays an important role in ensuring our nation’s strength & resilience. As a finale, the school gathered together for the concert segment with a prize-giving ceremony for the Fun Run and a live performance from our choir. As the concert reached the finale, pride and emotions soared as the entire school spontaneously rose to sing along to ‘Home’, grateful for one another’s company and celebrating our nation’s birthday as a family.

Assumption English School launched the Asian Young Leaders for Human Fraternity (AYLHF) initiative on March 30, 2023, as part of International Friendship Day and the school’s 70th anniversary. The event was attended by students from five schools in three countries: Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand. AYLHF is a youth-led initiative that aims to promote peace and respect for all people, regardless of race, language, or religion. It is inspired by the landmark Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, which was jointly signed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed el-Tayeb in 2019. During the two-day event, students from the participating schools engaged in a variety of activities, including cultural exchanges, discussions on human fraternity, and the making of popiah, a delightful Singaporean

dish. They also had the opportunity to meet and interact with Mr. Lawrence Chong, Consultor on the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue and a member of the School Committee. The event was graced by the Guest-of-Honour, Ms Janet Ang, a Nominated Member of the Parliament of Singapore. AYLHF is a significant initiative that has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of young people in Asia. It is a testament to the commitment of AES to fostering a culture of peace and understanding. Here are some of the highlights of the event: • Cultural exchanges: Students shared their cultures through traditional dances, songs, and performances. • Discussions on human fraternity: Students had the opportunity to discuss the importance of human fraternity and how it can be promoted in their communities. • Making of popiah: Students worked together to make popiah, a local Singaporean dish. This activity was a great way for them to learn about each other’s cultures and to celebrate their common love for food. AYLHF was a successful event that brought together young people from different countries and cultures. It serves as a testament to AES's unwavering commitment to nurturing a culture of peace and mutual understanding.

The Catholic AssumptionKnights and teachers gather to keep our Faith Alive! every Friday. We come together to pray and worship God, for fellowship, to get to know each other better, to lay down our burdens, to offer up our weariness for the week and rest in the Lord. This community of brothers and sisters makes our time in school seem a lot less challenging for we know we are never alone in this journey. We are blessed to have Mr Brian Tan, our Montfortian Education Officer, and Canossian Sister Dorothy Lim join the School Catholicity team. On Jan 27, 2023, about 560 staff, students and alumni from the six MontfortianGabrielite Education Institutions (MGEI) and Boys’ Town honoured the birth of their patron saint St Louis Marie de Montfort. They dedicated the new school year to him with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal William Goh at the

Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Nativity Church). To encourage our Catholic students and staff to always be thankful, more prayerful and to forge a vibrant community of love and service, we also embarked on a fortnightly Eucharistic Celebration in Semester 2. Catholic students develop their leadership skills through Young Montfortian Associates (YMA), a Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) founded 5 years ago. These Secondary Two to Five Catholic student leaders plan and execute activities during CCA sessions for the Secondary One YMA members. They also grow in faith through their service as lectors, morning prayer leaders, choir members and altar servers. In addition, members of the Art, Drama and Media Ministry contribute to our spiritual growth with their Godgiven talents. The Community Building Ministry serves to bond members through games and activities. YMA is led by President Javier Sophia Magarette Pabualan of Class 3/3 and Vice-President Nathaniel Lau Kea Chuan of Class 3/1. We ask our Lady of the Assumption, Mother Mary, whom our patron saint St Louis Marie de Montfort has a devotion to, to continue watching over us and in all that we do, give glory to God!

GABRIEL PROGRAMME The GEAR-UP (Guiding & Empowering Students for Affiliation & Resilience to Unlock their Potential) Programme @ Assumption English School is also popularly known as the GABRIEL (Guiding And Building Resilience through Inclusive Education and Leadership) Programme. This school-based integrated support programme aims to enhance students’ learning motivation, strengthen their school connectedness and build their resilience. This is in tandem with the Montfortian Education Charter which aims to provide an Inclusive Education that focuses on students’ strengths, and not the circumstances that they are in. Whilst AES acknowledges that the backgrounds that the students come from may inhibit their ability to perform well in school, this programme ensures that one’s social mobility is safeguarded via positive observance of their academics, well-being, self esteem as well as their strengths. This is achieved by providing space for students to relax and recharge as well as to study independently, facilitating after-school programmes that create opportunities for them to interact with their peers, as well as leveraging on activities that are run by teachers and community partners who act as mentors to the students.
