COVID-19 – How do I protect myself and my family?

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), the Government has taken measures to limit the spread of infection in Singapore.

Here are some things you can do as an individual, to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Manage your health

  • Keep a close watch on your body for symptoms
  • Good personal hygifene:
    • Avoid touching your face
    • Cover your mouth with a tissue paper when coughing or sneezing, and dispose the soiled tissue paper in the rubbish bin immediately
  • Seek medical attention promptly if you are feeling unwell

Maintain clean hands

  • Practise regular hand washing with soap and water
  • E.g. before handling food or eating, after going to toilet, or when hands are dirtied by respiratory secretions after coughing or sneezing

Minimise contact with those unwell

  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell or showing symptoms of illness

Mask up when unwell

  • If you are feeling unwell, stay at home and avoid social gatherings.
  • Wear a mask and see a doctor promptly. Think you know how to wear a mask? Refresh your knowledge here.
  • If you have a fever or respiratory symptoms (e.g. cough, runny nose), remember to wear a mask and call the clinic ahead of the visit. Avoid taking public transport where possible.

What to do if you are travelling

  • The Ministry of Health advises to defer all travel to Hubei Province and non-essential travel to Mainland China.  If you’ve recently travelled to China, observe a Leave of Absence.

If you are going overseas, adopt the following precautions at all times:

  • Avoid contact with live animals including poultry and birds, and consumption of raw and undercooked meats

  • Avoid crowded places and close contact with people who are unwell or showing symptoms of illness

  • Observe good personal hygiene
  • Practise frequent hand washing with soap (e.g. before handling food or eating, after going to toilet, or when hands are dirtied by respiratory secretions after coughing or sneezing)

  • Wear a mask if you have respiratory symptoms such as a cough or shortness of breath

  • Cover your mouth with a tissue paper when coughing or sneezing, and dispose the soiled tissue paper in the rubbish bin immediately
  • Seek medical attention promptly if you are feeling unwell

  • Travellers should monitor your health closely for 2 weeks upon your return to Singapore. Seek medical attention promptly if you feel unwell, and inform your doctor of your travel history.
